The Community Builders Pathway to Independence program is delivered in partnership with Lets Get Legal NZ & ADRA NZ.  Our program is dedicated to empowering all young people to live lives they value but sadly there are an estimated 210,000 children and young people who don’t have access to the resources and opportunities they need to grow into the great adults they want to be.  Through attaining key essential documents a young individual has more doors of opportunity opened to them immediately in the area of Employment, Education & Independence.

We believe these levels of disadvantage are unacceptable.  That is why we have committed to doing our part in this big picture by assisting to reduce the number of young people who fall into high risk categories by empowering them to attain these documents which include:  A Drivers licence, Birth certificate, IRD No, Bank Account No, Passport & C.V.

Our trusts strategic focus is on supporting organisations who align with any of the below areas:
■ NZ Police
■ Youth justice: supporting young people who have interacted with the justice system .

■ Care and protection: supporting young people who have care and protection orders and interactions with Oranga Tamariki.
■ Long term beneficiaries: creating opportunities for people who struggle to find work, or experience inter-generational unemployment .
■ Young Maori & Pasifika between the ages of 16 - 24yrs of age.
This is more than just about attaining important documents.  It's about:
■ Creating safe, responsible & legal drivers.
■ Making oneself more Employable - a driver’s licence is a requirement for 70% of job opportunities in New Zealand, even for entry level jobs that don’t involve driving.  Employers use a licence as a way of assessing reliability to get to work, as well as an indication of aptitude and attitude.
■ Enabling an individual to follow their chosen career pathway especially if it involves Police, Trades/Vocations, Nursing or even the Hospitality sector to name a few.
■ Having your independence - Keeping connected with others, relief of the daily errands & pressures of life to get important things done and/or getting to places, reducing social isolation and improving health outcomes.
■ Gaining an official form of I.D - An Individual will have access to services that require valid photo ID – e.g. opening a bank account, signing up for a tertiary course, accessing social services, or renting a trailer.  A driver’s licence is New Zealand’s default form of photo ID, particularly for people without passports, and without one people face significant barriers to accessing many services and opportunities.
■ Reduced risks ie fines, car impounds, jail & repeat offending.
■ Sense of achievement! Sometimes this is the catalyst for change as we have seen happen many times in the past because they have to work hard to get this, it's not just given
■ Bonus - You are able to gain NCEA Level 1 & 2 credits.

Our wider impact focus:
Current approaches to shaping attitudes towards driver licensing are not working as well as they could. As a country, we are failing to create a compelling value proposition for being a licensed, legal driver – one that resonates with the priorities, behaviours and interests of young people in particular, but also with their families and other influencers.
This is not just a road safety problem The issues that we’ve identified impact right across government – not only on transport and road safety, but also employment and skills, policing and corrections, income support, education, citizenship and social wellbeing. The wider impacts and costs of these issues are felt not only by affected individuals and families – they are borne by New Zealand as a whole.  If further developed, we believe these changes could directly contribute to achieving Better Public Service results:
  • Reduce long-term welfare dependence
  • Reduce total crime rate (particularly youth crime)
  • Reduce re-offending
